The Port of Waterford has reached a key milestone with the submission of its planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála for a new Offshore Renewable Energy Capable Terminal at Belview in County Kilkenny. This follows the recent award of a Maritime Area Consent, enabling the Port to seek permission to build the specialised infrastructure needed to support Ireland’s offshore wind ambitions.
The proposal includes a 250-metre wharf extension, new operator facilities, berthing pontoons, workshops, warehouses, and office space for ORE companies. The development also incorporates on-site renewable power generation, upgraded electrical systems, and a dedicated biodiversity area. Together, these investments will significantly enhance the Port’s capacity to act as a strategic base for offshore projects in the Celtic Sea, including the proposed Tonn Nua Offshore Wind Farm.
As Ireland works towards delivering its offshore wind targets by 2030, the Port of Waterford is positioning itself as a critical hub for the industry. A member of Wind Energy Ireland, alongside other leading ports, Waterford’s commitment underlines the essential role of port infrastructure in meeting national climate targets. For the wider wind industry, this marks another step in building the supply chain and regional capacity needed to deliver a clean energy future.
